The 西班牙语 major has three tracks, for non-native, heritage 和 native speakers of 西班牙语. These categories refer to a student’s linguistic ability 和 are determined by the 西班牙语 area adviser. As such, tracks 和 appropriate courses are selected in consultation with the 西班牙语 area adviser. Study abroad in a 西班牙语-speaking country is strongly recommended.

母语人士课程. Native speakers will start coursework at the 4000 level. In consultation with the 西班牙语 area chair, they should begin with跨越4301年or跨越4302年, with one exception: native speakers who have not had formal academic training in written 西班牙语 may begin coursework with跨越3359年.

Track for Heritage Speakers:Heritage speakers must take跨越2323年和跨越3359年而不是跨越2302年和跨越3358年. From the second category above, they may select from跨越3373年,跨越3374年, or跨越3375年只有.

Track for Non-Native Speakers:The requirements below reflect the non-native track.

An SMU undergraduate degree requires a minimum of 120 credit hours 和 must include completion of theUniversity’s Common Curriculum, one major 和 a combination of electives 和/or other majors or minors. Completion of certain majors requires more than 120 hours to finish the degree. The credit hours within this curriculum are distributed as follows:

Students on the non-native track may take up to one WL course about the 西班牙语-speaking world taught in English. Students on the heritage 和 native tracks may take up to two such WL courses. These courses may be taken from the following:
